The Macedonian Tombs of Pella
The Macedonian Tombs of Pella
Project awarded by the WMF (World Monuments Fund)
The Macedonian tombs of Pella (Greece), have been included in the WMF Watch List 2008 of the 100 most endangered monuments all over the world, after a proposal submitted by the CICOP Hellas.
A pilot project for safeguarding one Macedonian tomb was awarded by the World Monuments Fund Kress Foundation European Preservation Program. This pilot project will be a part of a general project for the preservation, upgrade, enhancement and promotion of the archaeological area of Pella, the capital of ancient Macedonia. Shelters are proposed for the protection of the Macedonian tombs. To be able to propose materials and construction methods we should define the hydrothermal behavior of the materials of the tomb itself and also its static behavior. A management plan for the next years should be made. This pilot plan can be used for other tombs of the same construction type.
Additionally, a very important contribution of the WMF award is going to be the creation of a 3-dimensional representation of the tomb. The 3D representation of the tomb is going to be an important educational and promotional tool.
