“Intervention techniques on reinforced concrete works”

Orvieto, Viale Carducci 3 (CICOP Italy headquarters)

December 1-7, 2002
Hours: 9.00-13.00, 15.00-19.00

Course Programme

Sunday, December 1, 16.00

  • Participants reception and introduction to the course, available literature. Show of materials and technologies for structural reftrofitting.

Monday, December 2, morning

  • Types of intervention realized with the use of reinforced concrete or metallic elements, on beams, pillars, knots of frame structures. Description of the intervention methods, technologies, materials.

Monday, December 2, afternoon

  • Examples of types of intervention made with reinforced concrete, on beams, pillars, knots of frame structures. Mechanical behavior under static and seismic loads.

Tuesday, December 3, morning

  • Mechanisms of stress transmission between added materials and existing materials: concrete/concrete cohesion, concrete/concrete friction, concrete/concrete compression stress transmission, concrete/concrete stress transmission by means of the resin thin layers (injections and impregnations), steel/concrete stress transmission by means of resins or resins of mortars, steel/steel stress transmission (dowel action, pin action).

Tuesday, December 3, afternoon

  • Anchors, technologies, materials, testing – anchors with plastic ampoules – expansion anchors, short anchors, micro-anchors (Hilti nails type). Pins subject to tensile and cutting stress at the same time, interaction between anchors close to other anchors and to the edge of the restored/reinforced elements.
  • Examples of application.

Wednesday, December 4, morning

  • Design and verification of restored/reinforced sections, local replacements of concrete and reinforcement bars and possible addition of stirrups, steel plating method, “flush recovery”; metallic angles and stiffening brackets.
  • Testing of reinfirced sections with metallic hoops (by means of bands, spirals, collars).
  • Testing of reinforced sections with partial prestressing.

Wednesday, December 4, afternoon

  • Examples and numerical modeling of the restored/reinforced sections, safety coefficients, italian regulations.

Thursday, December 5, morning

  • Strengthening interventions with structural textiles: materials (resins, fabrics), production technologies, application technologies, commercial types in Italy, mechanical performance. Checks/draft of rimmed elements.

Thursday, December 5, afternoon

  • Strengthening interventions with structural fabrics on beams, columns, nodes. Carbon, kevlar, glass fabrics, mono, bi-directional and hybrid fabrics. Interventions with prepregs / on site impregnated fabrics with epoxy resins. Durability.

Friday, December 6, morning

  • Strengthening interventions with polymeric networks (polypropylene or polyethylene) on beams, columns, nodes: materials (production, performance, market), intervention technologies, anchors.

Friday, December 6, afternoon

  • Strengthening interventions with polymeric networks on beams, columns, nodes: testing on the reinforced sections. Durability.
  • Examples and comparisons with the traditional techniques of plating (with metallic networks).

Saturday, December 7, morning and afternoon

  • Examples of implementation and practical exercises.
